THE BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOL "ALMA MATER"
THE RED AND GOLD
In the land of golden popies, In the sunny west;
Stands a school that we hail Berkeley, Ranked among the best.
Berkeley's standards we'll not al-ter, but her name uphold;
'Neath her colors we can't falter, Hail our red and Gold!
The person (or persons) who penned the words to this song is unknown. The music was written by H. S. Thompspn, a Boston minstrel-musician. Its title was "Annie Lisle," a ballad about a virtuous young lady destined for tragedy. It became a war song during the civil war, adopted by A.L. Hudson (see image below). It was adopted by Cornell University in 1870 as its Alma Mater. When it became the Berkeley High alma Mater, no one seems to know.
